Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz shared a unique bond.
In an exclusive clip from Catchy Comedy Network in celebration of their new Catchy Loves Lucy programming block, the couple’s daughter, Lucie Arnaz talks about how the special relationship between her parents changed, but wasn’t broken, by their decision to divorce.
As a slideshow of photos of the couple plays, Lucie says, “When I see those old movies, I see two young people in love, building a house together, giving silly parties. Just regular, ordinary people.
“It is a little bit of a tragedy that they did what they said they wanted to do. They created this magnificent show that we still have, but it got in the way of what they also wanted, which was to have a family and be together,” she continued, noting the “stress” of their busy lives damaged the relationship.

“Truth be told, after they were divorced, that came back in kind of a wonderful way,” she noted.
“They started to respect each other in a different way. A lot of the fear was gone. They had other lives with other people that, I don’t know that they ever loved them the same way they loved each other, but they were good for them.”
Of her mother, Lucie noted, “She was happy that he found somebody who would be good for him and who took care of him.”

“She called him, weekly, for advice…and he would advise,” Lucie said of her parents’ relationship. Desi maintained a beautiful tradition.
“He sent her red and white carnations on every anniversary for the rest of his life,” she said.
“It was a good time in their lives. I think, that period when they were still connected but not married.”
