Why Some Families Place Cloves in an Onion: A Look at This Traditional Practice

Across different households, especially during chilly seasons, a curious tradition often reappears: a peeled onion studded with cloves, placed quietly in a bedroom overnight. At first glance, it may seem like an old-fashioned superstition or a quirky relic from another era, but many families remember it as one of those small rituals that signaled care and comfort. Long before modern air filters, vapor rubs, or wellness gadgets became common, people leaned on everyday kitchen staples to create a soothing environment. The sight of a clove-spiked onion resting on a bedside table could stir memories of childhood winters, sleepless nights, and a parent quietly trying to make the house feel just a little more restful for everyone inside.

The method itself is remarkably simple, which may explain why it spread so easily from one generation to the next. A whole onion is peeled, punctured gently with whole cloves, and placed on a plate in a room where someone hopes to feel more comfortable. As the evening goes on, the onion releases its sharp scent while the cloves contribute a warm, spicy aroma. Together, they create a distinctive fragrance that some describe as clearing or refreshing, especially in stuffy indoor air. For many families, the scent wasn’t linked to specific health outcomes—it was simply part of an atmosphere that felt nurturing and familiar during long winter nights.

Modern explanations don’t elevate this tradition to a cure-all, but they do offer insight into why it became so beloved. Onions naturally contain sulfur-based compounds that give them their strong odor, while cloves contain eugenol, an aromatic oil commonly used for its rich, pleasant smell. When combined, the two scents can resemble basic forms of aromatherapy, helping a room feel calmer or easier to breathe in. While these fragrances don’t treat illness or replace medical care, they can encourage relaxation, which is often valuable when rest is difficult to come by.

Ultimately, practices like this persist not because they are scientifically proven remedies, but because they represent small, meaningful gestures rooted in family memory. Placing an onion with cloves near a bedside may not change the course of a cold, but it can bring comfort through familiarity, care, and the simple act of doing something thoughtful for someone you love. Many families choose to continue this tradition—not out of expectation, but out of affection. In a world where solutions are often fast, polished, and clinical, a humble onion and a handful of cloves remind us that sometimes warmth comes from the rituals that connect us to those who looked after us before we could look after ourselves.

The Inspiring Life Journey of Mary Ann Bevan

The story of Mary Ann Bevan is often remembered through a single photograph, but her life was far richer, more courageous, and more complex than any image suggests. She lived at a time when differences in appearance were met with cruelty rather than understanding, and yet her journey reflects remarkable strength and love. Born on December 20, 1874, in Plaistow, East London, Mary grew into a confident young woman with a promising future. She became a skilled nurse, admired not only for her abilities but for her kindness and striking appearance. In 1902, she married Thomas Bevan, building a loving family and welcoming four children. Life seemed full of possibility until tragedy abruptly altered its course—Thomas passed away just fourteen years later, leaving Mary to navigate a world with limited support for widowed mothers.

While adjusting to life as a single parent, Mary began to experience mysterious symptoms that gradually altered her physical appearance. At a time when medical science was still in its early stages, she had no understanding of the condition that was changing her face and body. Today, we know she suffered from acromegaly, a hormonal disorder caused by excessive growth hormone in adulthood. Without treatment options available, her features grew more pronounced, and her employment opportunities diminished. The condition not only affected her health but cost her the nursing career she relied on—a devastating setback for a woman responsible for four young children.

Faced with mounting financial pressure, Mary made a decision that has often been misunderstood. She responded to a job advertisement seeking individuals with unusual physical characteristics to perform in traveling shows. The choice was not driven by ambition or desire for attention—it was driven by necessity and maternal responsibility. Contemporary accounts describe her not as a figure of ridicule, but as a dignified and resilient woman determined to earn enough to secure her children’s future. Her work eventually took her to the United States, where she performed at Dreamland Circus in Coney Island. Although the environment could be harsh, it provided the income she needed to keep her family stable and educated.

Mary’s story eventually reached the attention of Dr. Harvey Cushing, a pioneering neurosurgeon whose research helped identify her condition. He expressed compassion for her circumstances and emphasized that her appearance was the result of a medical disorder rather than something deserving of mockery. After years of sacrifice, Mary returned to England, having successfully financed her children’s schooling. She passed away at 59, and her final wish—to be buried in her homeland—was honored. Today, Mary Ann Bevan is recognized not for the cruelty of the world around her, but for the extraordinary resilience, love, and dignity she demonstrated. Her legacy remains a powerful reminder that strength often shows itself most profoundly in quiet acts of devotion.

People are all pointing out the same thing with Melania Trump during DC return after Thanksgiving

Donald and Melania Trump are back in Washington after celebrating Thanksgiving in Florida. The president made many headlines over the long weekend, while Melania stayed out of the spotlight.

However, upon returning to the White House lawn, cameras caught the two leaving Marine One. Now, social media is mocking the first lady for what she was wearing.

Thanksgiving is over for this year. Donald and Melania Trump, alongside their son Barron, celebrated at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida. The president had plenty of work to do and made news for both this and that, while Melania Trump stayed out of the spotlight and spent time with her son.

Still, as the holiday ended, Melania had made headlines, at least on social media. On Sunday night, the President and First Lady of the United States returned to DC, landing with Marine One on the White House lawn.

But as they left the helicopter, and Air Force One, a little earlier for that matter, social media users on X noticed something strange. It was dark outside, but Melania Trump was wearing sunglasses.

“Melania would probably do a better job navigating those stairs in stilettos if she wasn’t wearing dark glasses at night. What’s with that? Does she think she’s Anna Wintour?” one user commented.

Social media erupts as Melania Trump is pictured wearing sunglasses at night

Another user said, “If she can’t wear her sunglasses, she’s hiding behind a big brimmed hat. She doesn’t want anybody looking at her and she doesn’t wanna look at anybody.”

Others continued pushing the bizarre conspiracy theory that, in fact, it wasn’t Melania Trump returning to DC with Donald, but a body double.

“Why would the real Melania be wearing sunglasses after dark????” one asked.

Another user commented, “Sunglasses at night, that’s the doppelgänger not the real version Melania.”

A third user joked, “Where is Melania channeling Cory Hart? Normal people don’t wear sunglasses at night,” referring to Canadian singer Cory Hart’s hit song Sunglasses at Night.

While many questioned Melania Trump’s choice to wear sunglasses – or even whether it was her – others praised the first lady.

“I wonder if maybe she doesn’t have eye makeup on and doesn’t want to be seen? I know if I think I will fall asleep during a trip I don’t wear eye makeup so it doesn’t get messed up while I am sleeping. (By the way I am a liberal!),” a user stated.

Leaked Christmas audio of Melania reappears

“Melania Trump should have a fashion book big enough for your coffee table. Don’t get me started on her coat her jacket and her sunglasses. Lady is pure class,” another said.

Christmas is upon us, and last week, Melania Trump welcomed the annual White House Christmas tree to the grounds of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. However, she has not always loved the Christmas preparations at the White House.

In 2020, a leaked audio recording by Melania’s former friend and senior adviser, Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, reached CNN.

The recording was from the summer of 2018, where Melania complained about having to perform the Christmas duties of the First Lady while at the same time being criticized for her husband’s then-policy of separating families who illegally crossed the southern border.

“They say I’m complicit. I’m the same like him, I support him. I don’t say enough I don’t do enough where I am,” Melania said. “I’m working … my a** off on the Christmas stuff, that you know, who gives a f*** about the Christmas stuff and decorations? But I need to do it, right?”

She continued, “OK, and then I do it and I say that I’m working on Christmas and planning for the Christmas and they said, ‘Oh, what about the children that they were separated?’ Give me a f****** break. Where they were saying anything when Obama did that? I can not go, I was trying get the kid reunited with the mom. I didn’t have a chance – needs to go through the process and through the law.”

People are coming out as ‘Berrisexual’ – here’s what it means

Here we’ve explained ‘graysexual‘, ‘demisexual‘ and ‘almondsexual‘ over the past year or so, bringing our readers up to speed as we find out for ourselves in real time.

Call it a sign of the times, perhaps, but it seems like there are new ways, new labels for one to define their experiences of attraction being created constantly.

Now, let me make it clear that I don’t have anything specifically against this. I’m not some grumpy curmudgeon resisting change and vehemently complaining because things aren’t exactly the way they used to be.

That said, it can all get a bit confusing. It seems like there are so many ways for people to identify, such a large spectrum of words with which to describe one’s sexuality and preferences when it comes to attraction, that it’s impossible to keep track.

Which is why we’re doing our best to keep people informed and updated. In that vein, we thought it only right to shed some light on the concept of being “berrisexual”.

As per reports, people on Reddit are identifying as being berrisexual, so here’s exactly what it means.

On Urban Dictionary, one of the earliest definitions describes someone who identifies as berrisexual as “someone attracted to women and feminine genders and androgynous genders, but also very rarely attracted to men and masculine genders.”

Put simply, berrisexual individuals can be attracted to people across all genders, though attraction to men or masculine people tends to be lighter, less frequent, or secondary.

The term is relatively new compared to, say, those such as bisexual and pansexual, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have a right to hold space. Indeed, some Reddit users expressed their happiness at finally having a tag that better fits their personality and preference.

“Many people don’t know about berris**ual, and we need more representation!” one person wrote on Reddit.

“Now I don’t have to pick because berri fits like a glove,” another added, referencing a previous struggle to define their sexuality.

As one contributor on the LGBTQIA+ Fandom site put it: “Berrisexuality is about attraction to all genders… you can always date a man.”

A micro label more niche and specific than broader terms including bi, pan, or omnisexual, berrisexual allow for a small set of people to feel comfortable in their sexuality.

According to Queerdom Wiki, berrisexuality – also sometimes known as Laurian – is similar to pansexuality or omnisexuality in that an individual can experience attraction to all genders.

The main difference is the aforementioned attraction to men or masculine-aligned people being rarer or less strong than attraction toward women and nonbinary or androgynous people.

Did you know what being Berrisexual meant? Let us know in the comments.

If you meet this single requirement, you qualify for Trump’s $2,000 tariff dividends

President Donald Trump has been dangling cash in front of the American public in the form of a $2,000 “tariff dividend.” And of course, the big question everyone’s asking is: When are these checks supposed to show up?

Trump has been hyping the idea of handing out payments as a kind of financial thank-you for the years of tariffs collected under his administration. The promise stirred plenty of buzz, and plenty of confusion.

According to Trump, the cash could land in Americans’ bank accounts “by the middle of next year, a little bit later than that,” though he offered almost no concrete details.

“We’ve taken in hundreds of billions of dollars in tariff money. We’re going to be issuing dividends,” he said in November, adding that the payouts would be aimed at “low, moderate and middle incomes.”

So who actually gets the $2,000?

For now, there’s no official plan, no government forms, and no set rules.

But one well-known commentator says the criteria might be much simpler than people expect.

Social Security analyst and YouTuber Blind to Billionaire believes income alone could decide everything.

“It is based on your income — that’s it. I’ll make it very clear here, is your income below $75,000 a year, as an individual, yes or no? That’s it — that’s all you need to know. If your answer is yes, you are most likely eligible for this,” he explained.

He noted that similar income cutoffs were used for prior federal relief efforts:

“Generally, the threshold they put in place for income is $75,000 as an individual, $150,000 as a married couple.”

That means people who are unemployed or earning money outside traditional jobs might still qualify. But the big catch remains: nothing has been formally approved.

The biggest roadblock: Congress and math

Even if the public is excited, the $2,000 idea faces a mountain of financial and political challenges. The IRS has not officially approved any $2,000 stimulus checks for distribution to Americans in 2025.

And treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently cast doubt on whether the plan could actually happen, telling Fox Business:

“We will see,” while also stressing that “we need legislation for that.”

Translation: Congress would have to sign off on a spending plan that could cost hundreds of billions of dollars.

Republican Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin isn’t buying into the president’s payout proposal, arguing that any tariff dollars should go toward shrinking the nation’s $1.8 trillion deficit instead.

“Look, we can’t afford it. I wish we were in a position to return the American public their money, but we’re not,” he told Fox Business.

Johnson went on to criticize the soaring federal shortfall: “President Trump had deficits about $800 billion — Obama, in his last four years, $550 billion a year. Now we’re $2 trillion? Completely unacceptable. We have to start focusing on that and doing something about it.”

”Could come in lots of forms”

So, just how massive would the bill be? The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget estimates the price tag could reach $600 billion per year, far more than the government currently collects from tariffs.

Even narrowing eligibility doesn’t make the math pretty. Erica York, vice president of federal tax policy at the Tax Foundation, said that even limiting payments to households under $100,000 would still cost about $300 billion.

Bessent also hinted that the payout might not look like a traditional check at all.

“Could come in lots of forms,” he said, suggesting possibilities like tax credits or benefits tied to Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

So far, tariffs have generated roughly $195.9 billion total, nowhere close to what would be needed to fund nationwide dividend checks.

But Trump doesn’t seem deterred. Speaking aboard Air Force One, he doubled down: “It will be next year… The tariffs allow us to give a dividend. We’re going to do a dividend, and we’re also going to be reducing debt.”

Stimulus checks — direct payments sent by the federal government to Americans during times of economic hardship — were last distributed in 2021, with millions receiving up to $1,400 under the American Rescue Plan.

For now, Americans will just have to wait and see whether these “tariff dividends” become real money — or stay in the political-promise category.

The unbelievable story of Amanda Scarpinati moves me to tears

For decades Amanda Scarpinati cherished her old black and white photo of a nurse cradling her as a baby.

It was 1977 that the photo was taken at a hospital in New York after Amanda suffered a serious accident. Amanda, then just 3 months old, fell from the sofa into a hot-steam humidifier and was left with third-degree burns. In the photo, the little girl’s head is wrapped in gauze as the nurse does her best to comfort her.

Over the next few years, Amanda endured several operations and was bullied by her classmates because of her appearance. Whenever Amanda was having a terrible day, she would pick up the black and white photo of the nurse. It brought her comfort knowing that there was once a person who cared so much about her.

Amanda kept hoping to one day be able to find her guardian angel. She searched for 20 years, and eventually decided to turn to social media for one last try.

What happened next is incredibly heart warming. I just had to share this fascinating story!

It was 1977 when Amanda Scarpinati, 3 months old, was rushed in an ambulance to Albany Medical Center in New York with third-degree burns. She had fallen from the sofa and into a hot-steam humidifier.

At the hospital she was taken care of by a young nurse. The black and white photos from that year show her holding Amanda in her arms and smiling tenderly at her.

Bullied mercilessly

Amanda recovered from the incident, but sadly she was subjected to endless bullying throughout her childhood because of her burns.

“Growing up as a child, disfigured by the burns, I was bullied and picked on, tormented,” Amanda tells news agency AP. “‘I’d look at those pictures and talk to her, even though I didn’t know who she was. I took comfort looking at this woman who seemed so sincere caring for me.”

Amanda hoped that one day she would be able to find the nurse that had comforted and taken care of her during that tough time. After a 20 year search, with no luck, Amanda turned to social media. She shared the black and white photos on her Facebook page  and wrote: “I would love to know her name and possibly get a chance to talk to her and meet her. Please share, as you never know who it could reach.”

Spread like wildfire

Her post spread like wildfire, and the next day she got the message she had long been waiting for. Angela Leary, who had worked as a nurse at the hospital that same year, recognized her colleague Susan Berger. Susan was 21 at the time and had just finished college. She had also saved the photos and had never forgotten the little girl with the burns.

“I remember her. She was very peaceful,” Susan remembers. “Usually when babies come out of surgery they’re sleeping or crying. She was just so calm and trusting. It was amazing.”

Not long after, the pair had an emotional reunion after 38 years.

“I don’t know how many nurses would be lucky enough to have something like this happen, to have someone remember you all that time,” Susan says.

“I feel privileged to be the one to represent all the nurses who cared for Amanda over the years.”

I was so moved when I read this incredible story, especially considering everything Amanda has been through.

Share this story if you think that nurses all over the world do an incredible job taking care of people during the darkest moments of their lives. They are truly wonderful!

Born 16 weeks early — but what his dad did next changed everything!

He came into this world far too soon… tiny, fragile, fighting for every breath. Weighing no more than a small bottle of water, doctors warned the family to prepare for the worst. Machines tried their best — but his little body was losing strength.

Then, in a moment no one expected, the father made a choice that would change everything.

He lay down, removed his shirt, and placed his newborn son directly on his chest — skin to skin, heart to heart. The room went silent as nurses watched the monitors.

Within minutes… something incredible happened.

The baby’s heartbeat steadied.
His breathing softened.
His tiny fingers gripped his father’s skin as if saying,
“Daddy… don’t let go.”

Day after day, that father became the warmth, the rhythm, the life his son needed. Hours of holding him. Nights without sleep. Hope instead of fear.

And slowly… miracle after miracle… the baby who wasn’t expected to survive began to grow stronger. From fragile to fierce. From helpless to full of life.

Some heroes don’t wear capes.
Some just open their arms — and save a life.

He wasn’t supposed to be this strong.
Not this tiny.
Not this early.
Born after just 5 months in his mother’s womb — 16 weeks too soon, weighing no more than a bottle of water.

But then came the moment when no machine could keep him alive.

The father lay down, took off his shirt, and placed that tiny, fragile body on his chest — skin to skin, heart to heart.

Doctors called it “kangaroo care.”

A rescue through warmth.
Through breath.
Through the love of a father who refused to give up.

And as the nurses stood silently watching the monitors, the tiny heartbeat began to stabilize. Within minutes, that palm-sized body started fighting for life, as if whispering:

“Daddy… I’m here. Don’t let go.”

Day after day, week after week, that father — strong only on the outside — became his son’s hope, his comfort, his oxygen. Sometimes lying in the same position for hours, afraid to move. Sometimes sleeping upright just so that little body could feel he wasn’t alone.

And then the miracle happened.

From a baby small enough to fit in his hand, surrounded by tubes and machines…
to a smiling, healthy little boy resting in the arms of the man who never let go.

A story that proves machines don’t always keep us alive.
Sometimes, a father’s chest is enough.
Sometimes, love is enough.

Designed on the main level with an open floor area that supports cooking, gathering, and daily meals, the kitchen offers generous room for upgrades such as new cabinetry, appliances, or counters. Whether you prefer a modern renovation or classic country-style kitchen, the existing layout gives you an excellent starting point. The kitchen’s placement also helps keep the home feeling connected, offering easy access to both common and private areas.

The living and dining spaces flow naturally, encouraging a comfortable, relaxed lifestyle. With central air conditioning and natural gas utilities, the home supports year-round climate control and energy efficiency. While many of the interior finishes may benefit from updating, the home’s solid structure and straightforward layout allow you to renovate at your own pace. It’s an ideal opportunity for buyers who enjoy home improvement projects or want to add value over time.

Throughout the home, the flooring is labeled as “other,” which means the property is ready for your personal touch. Whether you prefer hardwood, luxury vinyl plank, carpeting, or tile, the blank-slate nature of the flooring gives you the freedom to match your preferred style and functionality.

One of the standout features of this home is the covered patio, which provides a comfortable place to enjoy the outdoors regardless of weather. It’s an ideal spot for morning coffee, weekend gatherings, or quiet evenings outside. With the cleared lot surrounding the home, extending your outdoor living space is easy—perhaps with a grill area, fire pit, gardens, or additional seating arrangements. The patio adds an extra dimension to the home’s livable space and encourages time spent outdoors.

The home is built on a pillar/post/pier foundation, a common and reliable style in ranch homes that makes future repairs, renovations, and under-home access more convenient. The exterior features durable vinyl siding, which is low-maintenance and long-lasting, and an asphalt shingle roof, a dependable roofing material that offers protection and weather resistance.

Utility access is a major convenience on this property. With public water, septic system, natural gas connection, and electric services provided by established companies (including Entergy, Atmos, and Greater Ouachita), buyers can expect reliable, straightforward utility management. These accessible services add value and reduce the complications often found with more rural properties.

While the home does not include fencing or waterfront features, its cleared lot serves as a versatile blank slate for future customization. The absence of fencing means that you have complete freedom to design your outdoor layout without limitations. Whether you want to install privacy fencing, build a play area, add a shed, or create a landscaped garden, you start with a clean, open space ready for development.

Located within the Monroe region and part of the “Other” subdivision category, the property offers the convenience of nearby amenities, schools, shopping, employment opportunities, and transportation routes. Yet, it still provides the quiet comfort of a residential area away from heavy traffic. The quick access to Monroe and Ruston makes this home ideal for commuters, students, or anyone who wants proximity to the city while maintaining a more peaceful lifestyle.

With no HOA, there are no additional monthly fees or restrictive regulations limiting your use of the property. You can personalize your home and land without needing approvals or navigating association guidelines. This level of freedom is increasingly valuable to buyers seeking to make property truly their own.

Financially, the home presents an incredible value. With a tax assessed value of $53,025, an annual tax amount of just $700, and a price that equates to $13 per square foot, this property offers affordability that is becoming increasingly rare. Few homes provide this much interior space, this number of bedrooms, and this kind of lot size at such a competitive value. It stands out as a strong opportunity for homeowners and investors alike.

Whether you are searching for an affordable family home, a rental investment, a renovation project, or a property you can personalize over time, this 4 bedroom, 2 bath ranch has all the key ingredients for long-term potential. The combination of a cleared lot, practical layout, flexible interior space, and easy access to Monroe and Ruston makes it an appealing option for a wide range of buyers.

From large bedrooms and central air conditioning to a covered patio and reliable utilities, the home is designed to support everyday living while leaving room for creativity and upgrades. With its solid structure, spacious layout, and accessible location, this property offers comfort today and opportunity for the future. If you’re looking for a home with space, flexibility, and value, this ranch-style residence is a standout choice.
