Before leaving, she reached into her bag and pulled out a small paper cup of hot coffee and a sandwich. “Would you like these?”

Thomas hesitated. “I can’t take”

“Please,” she said, pressing them into his hands. “You’d make my mom happy.”

He accepted with gratitude, his heart warming more from her kindness than the coffee itself.

The Lonely Corner

After she left, Thomas walked toward the street where he usually spent his afternoons. He found a small corner near a bakery  close enough to smell the fresh bread but too far to ever buy any.

He sat quietly, sipping his coffee, when a group of children passed by on their way home from school. One of them, a boy about ten years old, pointed and whispered, “Why’s that man sitting there?”

His mother quickly pulled him along, muttering, “Don’t stare.”

Thomas smiled faintly. He wasn’t angry. He had grown used to being invisible.

He woke to the sound of a guitar.

Thomas loved music. It reminded him of better times  of dancing in the kitchen with his wife, of singing lullabies to his daughter, of summer nights when the world felt endless.

As he listened, the young musician noticed him. Their eyes met briefly, and the man gave him a nod.

Then, without warning, the musician started playing a song Thomas recognized instantly  “What a Wonderful World.”

When he got up to leave, she handed him the drawing. “For you,” she said softly.

He looked surprised. “You drew this… now?”

She nodded. “Everyone deserves to see themselves the way I see them  as part of something beautiful.”

Months later, Luna fell ill. The vet said it was serious  her small heart was failing. Clara did everything she could: medicine, warmth, sleepless nights. She drew Luna over and over, trying to capture every expression, every flick of her ears, every spark of life.

When the end came, it was peaceful. Clara held Luna close as the little dog took one last breath and drifted away.
